Authentication of Legal Documents

All documents, such as adoption, trade-marks, non-governmental organization, foundation, or individual power of representation, property rights, court decisions, wedding or divorce certificates, or marital status, etc. that have to be presented to any government agency in Ethiopia should be authenticated by the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Washington, DC.

Before any of the documents are sent to the Embassy, the following process must be completed:

1.      The documents/s has/have to be authenticated by the Secretary of State of the state in which the organization exists or the individual lives.

2.      The document has to be sent to and authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.

3.      This authenticated document has to be sent to:

            You must include 

  1.    Payment of $94.80 in Money order, cashiers check or company check for each document. 

  2.  A  self addressed envelope with pre paid postage for the  return of your document

Application Form

For persons of Ethiopian origin

Simple documents such as property rights or transfer, wedding and divorce certificates, family reunion (passport and visa processing for minors) or legal representation in courts or government agencies, etc. should include:            

1.      The document has to be written in English and the translation in Amharic should be attached.

2.      Before you sign the paper take it to a Notary Public and sign there to make sure that the said person has correctly signed.

                3.      Then follow the process indicated in #s 1 – 3 and send it to the Embassy with payment

For Ethiopian Passport holders

All documents such us property rights or transfer, wedding and divorce certificates, legal representation in courts or government agencies and Pension have to be

  1.    Written in Amharic and bring to the embassy or take it to Notary Public and sign there to make sure that the said person has correctly signed then send it to the Embassy.  

  2.    A valid passport  

  3.    copy of Green card, I-94 or INS papers.

  4.   ( A)   Payment of $61.20 for Legal representation in courts, Pensions, and Property rights transfer.   payable by  Money order for each document.
      

  5.      (B)  $58.80 for authentication of Certificates: Such as wedding and divorce certificates.

  6.      A  self addressed envelope with pre paid postage for the  return of your document

Support Letter  for People Moving for Good to Ethiopia


If you want the embassy to write you a letter when you are moving to Ethiopia for good and to be eligible to take your personal effects duty free, Please see the required items and fill the appropriate Application form.

Required documents 

  • A completely filled Application Form
  • List all your items ( your items must be listed in your group )
  • A copy of valid Green Card or if you are US citizen your person of Ethiopian Origin Residency Card
  • A Money Order for 58.8
  • A document that shows you have been in the US for the last 5 years
  • Your last 5 years tax return (W2 Form)
  • A document that shows you have left your job or retired
  • Nature of Employment in Ethiopia
  • And Other documents that proof you are moving for good

To be eligible you must be in one of the five classification  groups listed. Each individual can only take duty and tax free from the group list he /she belong . To see the list of items for each group and to find out were you belong click here 

 

Requirements to Shipping of Human Remains

The government of Ethiopia Depends on Ethiopian Airlines to set the regulations for transport of Human remains. Ethiopian Airlines requires the following:

  1. Original Death Certificate

  2. A letter form the funeral home showing 
    A
    . Embalming by US standard Method
    B. Use of hermetically sealed casket
    C. None -Contagious disease Letter issued by local health authority and Department of Health.

  3. A Permit letter form the Embassy of Ethiopia. All the above (1, and 2) have to be presented to the embassy.

    There is no fee Associate for the service at the Embassy. 
    If all the requirement stated in 1 and 2 are fulfilled the Embassy will issue a permit for the shipment of of the body. 
    If you are mailing your documents please include a self-addressed envelope with postage for the return mail.
