Addis Ababa, February 26, 2019 – Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, traveled to Djibouti to attend the 46th session of IGAD Council of Ministers.
Modernizing IGAD’s working system in the focus of the two-day meeting which will be on 26-27 February 2019.
Ethiopia is the current chairperson of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
IGAD is an eight-country trade bloc in Africa-namely Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda.

Agency to Put in Place New System to Identify Exact Number of Ethiopian Diaspora (February 25, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 25, 2019 – The newly established Diaspora Agency said it is working to put in place a system that enables to identify the exact number of Ethiopian Diaspora and the countries where they live in.
Agency’s Director General, Selamawit Dawit, told that efforts are underway to implement soon a system that attach special attention to efficient data management and strengthen the Diaspora communities’ engagement in transferring technology, apart from remittances.
The agency, which will be accountable to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and manage its own budget and financial activities, is also tasked to ensure the protection of the rights and dignity of Ethiopians in the Diaspora.
According to the World Bank report, global remittances touched $689 billion – mark in 2018. The flow of remittances to developing and under-developed countries is critical to the economies.
India continued to top in terms of receiving remittance, and was followed by China, the Philippines, Mexico, Nigeria, and Egypt.

National Bank to Amend Laws to Boost Involvement of Diaspora Ethiopians in Finance Sector (February 22, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 20, 2019 –The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) announced that it is on process to approve three draft bills to modernize the financial sector and improve the efficiency of remittance flows.
According to Dr Yinager Desie, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, the bank has already amended 10 non-functional and defective directives during the past seven months.
The new draft bills, which will be approved once consultations are held with relevant bodies, incorporated directives that allow Ethiopian Diaspora to take part in Ethiopia’s financial sector, he told journalists today.
The Governor further said the bank is ready to put in place a new, efficient, and innovative system to improve remittance flows, which is the main source of the country’s foreign currency earnings, including mobile banking system.
Though it is hard to say that that country’s foreign reserve is sufficient, it has shown improvement compared to it was seven months ago. However, the decline in overall export trade performance remains a threat, he added.
Dr Yinager also rejected rumor of making exchange rate adjustment on foreign currency.
“The government has no plan to make any adjustment. However, it will take administrative measures to narrow the gap between the black market exchange rate and the legal one,” he said.
Ethiopia’s economic growth has been declining since 2015. The growth for this fiscal year is expected to close to or more compared to the one registered last fiscal year, he stated.
The country registered a 7.7 percent economic growth last year.

Addis Ababa, February 21, 2019 – The Addis Ababa city administration today launched a project to convert river banks of the city into public spaces and green areas at a cost of 29 billion birr.
The project, which will be implemented by Varnero PLC, is expected to take three years for completion, it was noted.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Engineer Takele Uma, deputy mayor of Addis Ababa city, said the project, which was initiated by the Prime Minister, is for all Ethiopians and residents of Addis Ababa.
He further said “we will try to make Addis Ababa (meaning new flower in Amharic) live up to its name.

UK Provides £30mln for Prosperity, Security Projects across Africa (February 22, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 22, 2019 – UK’s Minister of State for Africa, Harriett Baldwin, yesterday announced up to £30 million funding for prosperity and security projects across Africa.
The funding boost comes as Britain signs a new strategic partnership with the African Union, strengthening the engagement between the continent and the UK Government.
Speaking ahead of the signing of the partnership at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mrs Baldwin said:
“From our support to observers ensuring free and fair elections in Nigeria and Senegal this weekend, to the crucial training our Armed Forces provides to security forces in Kenya, the UK’s partnership with African countries continues to help empower and upskill people across the continent, and this funding will allow us to boost those efforts.
“Our new partnership will also cement our relationship with the African Union, building on growing economic ties to forge new opportunities for young people and reinforce our close bonds.”
The partnership will strengthen cooperation on security and prosperity, and support a joined up approach to tackle climate change.
The funding, which forms part of the partnership agreement, and will be spread over three years, will be used to train peacekeepers in Kenya, assist free and fair elections, and support the next phase of negotiations for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
The signing of the strategic partnership also allows the UK to support African-led ambitions with British expertise, to create more opportunities and more jobs, according to a statement the British Embassy in Addis Ababa sent to FBC.

Eritrean Delegation Led By FM Osman Saleh On Official Visit To Ethiopia (February 21, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 21, 2019 – A Eritrean delegation led by Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Eritrea is on an official visit to Ethiopia.
Osman Saleh also delivered message to Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed from of President Isaias Afwerki on bilateral relations and regional developments, according to Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information.
On sideline of the visit, a joint high level committee meeting was held to assess progress in the bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Yemane said on Twitter.

UK Expresses Continued Commitment to Support Ethiopia’s Efforts to Promote Regional Peace (February 19, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 19, 2019 – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, today received UK’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU and ECA, Alastair David McPhail.
The Minister commended UK’s strong relations with Ethiopia highlighting the allrounded political and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Dr. Workneh briefed the ambassador on the ongoing comprehensive reforms in Ethiopia, including media freedom, opening up the political space, democratization as well as advancing the respect of human rights.
Ambassador McPhail expressed his country’s continued commitment to support Ethiopia in its efforts of ensuring economic development and promoting regional peace, and stability as well as economic integration in the Horn of Africa.
Dr Workneh also stressed the need to further bolster the trade and investment ties between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom.
The UK was among the first countries to open an embassy in Addis Ababa, while Ethiopia was the first African country to establish an embassy in London, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

U.S. Donates $4 Mln In New Medical Equipment, Medicines For Four Regions (February 15, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 15, 2019 – The United States handed over more than $4 million US dollars worth of new medical equipment and medicines to the Ministry of Health for use in hospitals and health centers in Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella, and Somali regional states.
The equipment was provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID’s) Transform Health in Developing Regions activity and includes mobile ultrasound machines, incubators, and heating stations to keep newborns warm after birth.
The project will also train Ethiopian health center staff on how to properly use and maintain the new equipment, according to a statement the US Embassy in Addis Ababa sent to FBC today.
In addition, USAID provided medicines to treat respiratory disease syndrome in newborns, obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, and other health problems.
As a result, health centers in rural areas of the country will be able to improve childbirth delivery services and basic healthcare for mothers and children.
USAID Deputy Mission Director Alicia Dinerstein remarked, “We hope this is a catalytic investment that will increase the quality of – and demand for – health services, and enable providers to better meet the needs of their communities.”
U.S. development programs like the USAID Transform Health in Developing Regions program invest in the capacity of Ethiopian institutions and the Ethiopian people to address their own needs and become stronger partners.
The United States is the largest bilateral donor to Ethiopia’s health sector, with approximately USD $150 million per year in funding for HIV/AIDS; malaria; maternal, neonatal and child health; nutrition; tuberculosis; and water, sanitation and hygiene.
Overall, the United States has provided approximately $4 billion in development and humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia over the past five years

Ethiopia and Djibouti Sign Agreement to Construct 767km Pipeline Project (February 15, 2019)

Addis Ababa, February 15, 2019 – Ethiopia and Djibouti have signed an agreement to construct a 767km pipeline project linking the two countries.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Dr Samuel Hurcato, and Minister of Energy in Charge of Natural Resources of Djibouti, Mr Yonis Guedi, signed the agreement in Addis Ababa today.
Dr Samuel on the occasion said the agreement, which was signed after extensive negotiations, ensures the mutual benefit of both countries.
When it is completed, the project will generate foreign currency besides creating more employment opportunities allowing the country to export natural gas from Calub Hilala fields, according to the Minister.
Mr Guedi for his part said the project will further cement the long-standing ties between the two nations.
About 700 km of the pipeline stretches from Calub Hilala fields to Djibouti border within Ethiopia, while the remaining 67 Km is within Djibouti.
According to the agreement, the construction of the pipeline commences this Ethiopian fiscal year and will take two years for completion.

Eritrean Public Diplomacy and Cultural Group Arrives in Addis Ababa (February 14, 2019)

Addis Ababa February 14, 2019 An Eritrean public diplomacy and cultural group has arrived in Addis Ababa this evening.
The 55-person group was welcomed by senior government officials upon its arrival at Bole International Airport.
During its stay in Ethiopia, the group will stage artistic shows that consolidate relations between the two countries in Addis Ababa and regional cities, it was learned.
The delegation will present musical concerts along with an Ethiopian cultural group in Bahirdar, Adama, and Hawassa, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The program will be wrapped up in Addis Ababa where about 25,000 spectators attend a show at Millennium Hall.
An Ethiopian public diplomacy group will reciprocate by travelling to Eritrea soon on same mission.
