Deputy PM Demeke Attends AU Summit on Sudan, Libya Situations (April 23, 2019)
Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen attended the African leader’s emergency summit held in Cairo, Egypt today to address the situations in Sudan and Libya.
The summit was also attended by several African heads of state, including Egyptian President and current chairman of the African Union (AU), Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Speaking after the summit, Sisi said the meeting agreed to give Sudan’s ruling military council three months to implement democratic reforms.
The decision extends a 15-day deadline given by the African Union last week for the Transitional Military Council (TMC) of Sudan to hand over power to a transitional civilian-led political authority.
The TMC took over power after President Omar al-Bashir was ousted on April 11.
