Ethiopian Embassy in Washington D.C hosted a colorful cultural and tourism promotion event in cooperation with ThingstodoDC.com on February 17/2023.
H.E Ambassador Seleshi Bekele, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the U.S.A, on his opening remarks said “Ethiopia is a cradle of mankind, one of the oldest civilizations in the world, never colonized, a founding member of the United Nations and the African Union.”
He also added that “Ethiopia’s various attractions offer great opportunities for archeological and religious tourism, hunting safaris, bird watching, water sports, desert trekking, mountain hiking, camping and ecotourism.”
He encouraged participants to visit Ethiopia and experience the hidden treasures of the nation and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people.
Mr. Samson Arega Ethiopian Airlines U.S.A Regional Director on his part expressed the growing presence of the Airline in the country, including the upcoming Atlanta destination which is expected its first flight in May.
“The Airline continues to serve its customers with maximum comfort in a Pan- African spirit.” Mr. Samson added.
Mr. Greg Blad, CEO of ThingstodoDC.com expressed his commitment of working closely with the Embassy to promote the rich history and culture of Ethiopia to the American public.
Ethiopian traditional coffee ceremony with organic test and authentic Ethiopian cuisine were served to the attendants.
Traditional songs and dance, artifacts, alphabets, Ethiopian classic paintings and cultural attires were also showcased which gave a special aura to the program.
The breathtaking tourist sites such as the magnificent 4th-century AD Obelisks of Axum, the 11th Century medieval rock-hewn churches of Lalibela; the 17th Century castles of Gondar as many calls it the Camelot of Africa, the spectacular Sof Omar Caves, and the world’s fourth-holiest Islamic city – Harar as well as Negash, the earliest Islamic settlement in Africa, National Parks and other UNESCO registered heritages were promoted.
The participants expressed their satisfaction by the colorful event and affirmed their plan of visiting Ethiopia to explore the rich history and stunning attractions.

H.E Ambassador Seleshi met and discuss with Ms. Vanessa Ibarra, Executive Director of International & Immigrant Affairs, Mayor’s Office of Atlanta. The two were joined by Mr. Samson Arega, Ethiopian Airlines, Regional Director of USA.
Ambassador Seleshi expressed his appreciation to the Mayor of Atlanta for the unwavering support accorded to the Ethiopian Airline’s much anticipated operation to the city starting next May, 2023.
He also mentioned Ethiopia’s keen interest in establishing deeper connections with Atlanta in University linkages, sister city twining, technology transfer, investment, etc.
Ms. Vanessa on her part applauded the decision of #Ethiopian Airlines to connect Atlanta with Africa and beyond.
She also augmented the need to collaborate in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and tourism sector.
Mr. Samson on his part said the destination to Atlanta will be a great addition of the growing service of the Airline in the USA. It will cement the people to people ties of the two countries, he added.

The Institute of Foreign Affairs and Wollo University co-organized a policy consultation forum that aimed to encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and address investor concerns. Attending the forum, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H.E. Demeke Mekonnen stated that how we treat present investors would play a significant role in attracting others. He emphasized that all levels of government in the country should give attention to the concerns of foreign investors. He stated that all Ethiopian missions abroad will engage in intensive promotional activities to attract foreign direct investment and that a particular plan is prepared to accomplish this.
H.E. Ambassador Misganu Arga, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, remarked that now that Ethiopia is rising from national and international challenges it has encountered, all stakeholders should use this opportunity to promote the country’s investment. H.E. Yelkal Kefale, President of the Amhara Region, H.E. Belete Mola, Minister of Innovation and Technology, members of Parliament, state ministers, and ambassadors also attended the forum and paid a visit to Kombolcha Industrial Park.

The Government of Ethiopia recognized 52 Ethiopian diaspora associations from 25 countries that actively support their homeland in times of need.According to H.E. President Sahle-Work Zewde, the recognition is for all Ethiopians in the diaspora who stood by Ethiopia and the people.The president went on to say that the Government has established a welcoming climate for the Ethiopian diaspora to further engage with critical issues facing the country and its people.
President Sahlework Zewde also urged the Ethiopian diaspora to get involved in the peacebuilding and restoration process.Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, on his part, stated that the work done by the Ethiopian diaspora all over the world for their homeland when Ethiopia faced hardships and obstacles will be recognized in history.The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister urged the Ethiopian Diaspora to play a positive role in the country’s peacebuilding and restoration efforts.H.E. Dr. Mohamed Idris, Director General of Ethiopian Diaspora Service, stated that the government always respects the diaspora community’s contribution to the country in many forms and confirmed that similar recognition events will be held in the future.At the event, a book that archives list of Ethiopia’s diaspora associations was officially launched.
