Deputy PM Demeke Attends AU Summit on Sudan, Libya Situations (April 23, 2019)

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen attended the African leader’s emergency summit held in Cairo, Egypt today to address the situations in Sudan and Libya.

The summit was also attended by several African heads of state, including Egyptian President and current chairman of the African Union (AU), Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Speaking after the summit, Sisi said the meeting agreed to give Sudan’s ruling military council three months to implement democratic reforms.

The decision extends a 15-day deadline given by the African Union last week for the Transitional Military Council (TMC) of Sudan to hand over power to a transitional civilian-led political authority.

The TMC took over power after President Omar al-Bashir was ousted on April 11.

PM Dr Abiy Arrives to China to Attend BRI Forum (April 23, 2019)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed arrived in China today to attend the second Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) forum which will be held on April 25-27 in Beijing.

Launched close to six years ago, BRI is an ambitious effort aimed at strengthening infrastructure, trade, and investment links between China and some 65 other countries.

Ethiopia is among the first batch of African countries that signed cooperation documents concerning jointly building the Belt and Road.

With Chinese support, it is playing a bigger role as a bridge and a link for jointly advancing the initiative in Africa.

This year forum will be held under the theme “Belt and Road Cooperation: Shaping a Brighter Shared Future.”

The forum events include leaders’ round-table, high-level meeting, thematic forums, CEO conference and other side events.

Representatives from over 100 countries, including 40 leaders of foreign governments have confirmed their attendance.

The first Belt and Road Initiative forum was held in 2015.

President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior adviser, Ivanka Trump, has concluded her twoday Ethiopia visit and flew to Cote d’Ivoire this morning.
During her stay in Ethiopia, she met with President Sahle-Work Zewde and Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Moreover, she joined David Bohigian, Acting President and CEO of Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) to launch 2X Africa at the ECA and met with African Union (AU) officials at the AU headquarters.
Ms Trump also visited a textile and Handicrafts Company, met humankind’s original empowered woman-Lucy, and members of the Ethiopian Women’s Coffee Association.
In Cote d’Ivoire, she will visit a cocoa farm and participate in a meeting on economic opportunities for women in West Africa.
The event is part of the World Bank’s Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, a program that Ivanka Trump pushed the bank to introduce.

Advisor to the US President Ivanka Trump and Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) Acting President and CEO David Bohigian today launched OPIC 2X Africa.
The launch of the OPIC 2X took place at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, in the presence of Ethiopia’s President Sahle-Work Zewde and Giovanie Biha Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa
OPIC2X, a W-GDP initiative, seeks to directly invest $350 million to help mobilize $1 billion in capital to support women-owned, women-led, and women-supporting projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Launched in 2018, OPIC’s 2X Women’s Initiative has already invested more than $1 billion supporting women’s economic empowerment across the developing world.

PM Meets Ivanka Trump (April 15, 2019)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed received at his office Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser, and her delegation earlier this afternoon.
They discussed issues of mutual interest, according to office of the Prime Minister.
Ms. Trump is in Ethiopia as part of the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) initiative aimed at advancing global women’s economic empowerment.
Earlier today, she met President Sahle-Work Zewde at the Presidential Palace to discuss issues related to women empowerment.
Ivanka Trump briefed the Ethiopian President about the White House Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative she’s leading.
Yesterday, she visited a textile and Handicrafts Company and the Ethiopian Women’s Coffee Association.
Ms Trump arrived in Addis on Sunday as part of her four-day tour to Africa.

President Sahle-Work Receives Ivanka Trump (April 15, 2019)

Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde today received and held talks with President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior adviser, Ivanka Trump, at the Presidential Palace.
Their discussion mainly focused on works being made to empower women, according to office of the President
During the discussion, Ivanka Trump briefed the Ethiopian President about the White House Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative she’s leading.
She said the goal of the initiative, which was launched in February, is to economically empower 50 million women in developing countries by 2025.
After commending the ongoing efforts to empower women, Ivanka Trump said the government of the United States will provide assistance for these efforts. She also described the ongoing comprehensive reforms in Ethiopia as impressive.
President Sahle-Work for her past said the imitative is a good beginning to empower women and will get global recognition as far as it centered and targeted women worldwide.
Ethiopia is moving in a new path of reform to build capacity of women, particularly addressing gender-based challenges of female students at higher education institutions, President Sahle-Work stated.
The President finally said the government is committed to work in partnership with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to empower women.

Ivanka Trump arrived in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Sunday for a summit on African women’s economic inclusion and empowerment.
President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior adviser visited a coffee shop and textile company in Addis Ababa. She is there to promote a $50 million initiative enacted by her father in February that is aimed at encouraging women’s employment in developing countries.
The Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative says it hopes to “reach 50 million women by 2025, through the work of the the United States Government and its partners.”
“Fundamentally, we believe that investing in women is a smart development policy and it is a smart business,” Ivanka Trump said after sampling coffee at a traditional Ethiopian ceremony. “It’s also in our security interest, because women, when we’re empowered, foster peace and stability.”
It was not immediately clear if the controversy that surrounds the U.S. president will follow his daughter to Africa. The president has not been kind in his remarks about Africa and its migrants.
“I don’t think people will have a good feeling” Ethiopian journalist Sisay Woubshet said about the president’s daughter visit to the continent.
Marakle Tesfaye, an activist, said, however, “I think she’s coming genuinely to empower women and it’s good that she’s coming because she will push forward our agenda.”
Ivanka Trump will also meet with meet with Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed before going on to Ivory Coast, where she will attend a meeting on economic opportunities for women in West Africa.
She is also scheduled to make an appearance at a World Bank policy summit.

Mrs. Hirut Confers with UK Special Envoy for the Red Sea and Horn of Africa (April 10, 2019)

State Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mrs. Hirut Zemene conferred with H.E. Mr. Julian Reilly, UK Special Envoy for the Red Sea and Horn of Africa today (April 10), in which both sides accentuated the importance of elevating the already strong relations to new heights.
State Minister Mrs. Hirut Zemene appreciated the Ethiopia-UK collaboration for the peace and stability of the Red Sea and Horn of Africa region taking note of the historical commitment from both sides for peace and security as well as prosperity of the region.
Mrs. Hirut emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to bolster the implementation of South Sudan’s revitalized peace deal under the IGAD framework as well as support to the Federal Government of #Somalia. Mrs. Hirut also underpinned the importance of strengthening the institutions in Somalia for durable peace.
H.E. Mr. Julian Reilly commended Ethiopia’s continued commitment for regional peace and security including in South Sudan and Somalia.
The Special Envoy expressed UK’s commitment to advance cooperation with Ethiopia both bilaterally and under the IGAD framework in a bid to ensure development and peace and security in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa region.

US Ambassador: “US Firmly Committed to Support Ethiopia’s Reform Agenda” (April 10, 2019)

US Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Michael Raynor said the United States remains deeply inspired by Ethiopia’s ongoing economic and political reform agendas and firmly committed to supporting these efforts.
In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Ambassador Raynor pointed out that Ethiopia has been registering remarkable economic and political progress since Abiy Ahmed’s election as Prime Minister in April 2018.
He mentioned that flow of foreign direct investment to Ethiopia jumped by over 10 percent from 2017- 2018 and the US companies have shown an increasing interest to take full advantage of the opportunities that Ethiopia has to offer, bringing the types of responsible investments that benefit both countries.
“The Ethiopian people enjoy greater freedoms to express their views than at any time in recent memory and for the first time in 15 years the Committee to Protect Journalism has found no journalists imprisoned in Ethiopia,” he added.
On the way forward, Ambassador Raynor underlined the need for commitment not only from the government, but also from the Ethiopian people and civil society, to find the path to success.

Dr. Markos Meets the Visiting Italian Defense Minister (April 10, 2019)

State Minister H.E. Dr. Markos Tekle met H.E. Mrs. Elisabetta Trenta, Defense Minister of the Republic of Italy this morning (April 10), in which both sides exchanged views on ways of deepening the long tradition of cooperation between Italy and Ethiopia.
Dr. Markos said that Ethiopia and Italy have a longstanding relation which spans more than a century. The State Minister underlined that the recent exchange of visits of the Prime Ministers of the two countries demonstrated their commitment to elevate the bilateral ties.
Dr. Markos also emphasized the need to further strengthen cooperation on the maintenance of regional peace and security.
H.E. Mrs. Elisabetta Trenta, on her part, expressed appreciation of the political, economic, and legal as well as judiciary reforms in Ethiopia. She also expressed her country’s commitment to work more closely with Ethiopia on aspects of regional peace and security.
The cooperation between Ethiopia and Italy is multidimensional covering wide range of areas both bilaterally and regionally for the peace, prosperity and stability of the Horn of Africa region. The two Ministers expressed their Government’s readiness to further heighten the existing ties as well as chart out areas of cooperation untapped before.
