Airbus Awards Ethiopian for Unique Agility, Resilience during COVID-19 (December 16, 2020)

Airbus, the largest aircraft manufacturer, has awarded Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) for the unique agility and resilience that it displayed amid the COVID 19 global crisis.

Hadi Akoum, Airbus Vice President Sales Africa and Levant Customer Affairs yesterday delivered the award to Ethiopian Group CEO, Tewolde Gebre Mariam, at Ethiopian Headquarters.

Tewolde thanked Airbus for recognizing the efforts of the management and employees of Ethiopian unique agility and resilience amid the COVID 19 global crisis.

“We were there when the world needed us most,” he said.

Akoum, on his part said, “This is to express the admiration of Airbus executive management and Airbus whole employees for the unbelievable achievement of Ethiopian Airlines in this unprecedented epidemic.

“While other airlines were just trying to figure out what to do, Ethiopia Airlines was aggressively pressing ahead finding solution, creating solution converting their passenger aircraft to freighters. Ethiopian Airlines is the first one to do it on Airbus A350 and continue to fly and create even new business. This is something unique all over the world.”

Ethiopian is the first global airline that converted A350 passenger aircraft to cargo to transport the much needed medical supplies to combat the spread of COVID 19.

Ethiopian, the fastest growing Airline in Africa, is now operating 16 A350 aircraft in its network.

Ethiopian Resumes Flights to Mekelle Tigray Region (December 15, 2020)

Ethiopian Airlines announced that it has resumed flight to Mekelle City after disruption for weeks due to the law enforcement operation conducted on the TPLF junta in Tigray Region.

Ethiopian resumed flight on Tuesday to the capital city of Tigray Regional State following the successful accomplishment of the operation.

Ethiopian airplane arrived in Mekelle Alula AbaNega International airport today carrying passengers from Addis Ababa.  

All staff of the airline has now been on duty it said; adding that flight will continue twice a day to the city.

It is to be recalled that the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority disclosed on Monday the reinstatement of the air route in Tigray regional state.  

FM Demeke Briefs Senior UN Officials On Latest Developments In Tigray (December 15, 2020)

Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia today briefed senior UN officials on the latest developments in the Tigray region.

Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Vera Songwe, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, Catherine Sozi, Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the AU, Hanna Tetteh, and Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, Parfait Onanga attended the meeting.

On the occasion, Demeke told the officials about Ethiopia’s appreciation to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for taking a principled stand on the situation in the Tigray region.

He informed them the interim administration in Tigray has started discharging its responsibilities in re-establishing the bureaucratic structure, conversing with the community, and facilitating the restoration of basic services to the people in the region.

The recent visit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to the region and his discussion with the interim administration is an indication that life in the region is slowly turning into normalcy, he added.

He said a major part of the law enforcement operation is now over and what remains is the police work of apprehending the fugitives.

The main focus of the government now is in rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, he added.

In this regard, he said, the government has restored telephone and electricity lines in some areas and finalized preparation to rehabilitate damaged highways and airports.

Regarding the humanitarian issues in the region, Demeke underscored Ethiopia’s firm commitment to address concerns about internally displaced people, Ethiopian refugees in Sudan, and Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia.

He expressed hope that the humanitarian situation will significantly improve soon with the stabilization of the peace and security of the region coupled with the ongoing restoration and rehabilitation works.

He also assured them that the government is closely studying the concerns raised about Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia in order to provide appropriate response.

The UN officials said the Secretary-General believes that Ethiopia is an anchor of peace in the region and stability in Ethiopia means stability for the Horn of Africa, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For now, however, both delegations agreed that the absolute priority must remain the physical safety of displaced communities and the immediate reconstruction of foundational public utilities.

PM Abiy’s Visit to Mekelle Shows Return of Peace in Tigray: MFA (December 15, 2020

The recent visit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Mekelle city indicates that the region is returning to normalcy, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The Prime Minister last Sunday travelled to Mekelle, Tigray regional state, where he met with top military leaders and the interim administration of the region.

In biweekly press briefing today, MFA Spokesperson, Ambassador Dina Mufti, said “the visit of the Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, to Mekelle after the end of the law enforcement operation in Tigray regional state shows that peace in the region is returning to normalcy.”

During his meeting, the Prime Minister underlined that the most important task left now is restoration and rehabilitation in addition to man hunting the criminals, he said.

According to Ambassador Dina, the interim administration in Tigray is establishing its bureaucratic structure in various cities of the region from the kebelle to the upper level.

Following the rehabilitation of infrastructure which sustained heavy damages because of the criminal clique militia’s irresponsible acts, mobile voice services have been restored in Mekelle city and Maiychew, in addition to Dansha, Humera, Maikadra, Turkan, Maytsebri, Korem and Alamata, he said.

Mover, electricity has been restored to Mekelle city and surrounding towns, in the north western part of the country – specifically Metema, Humera and Welkayit, the ambassador added.

He said the Government of Ethiopia has been delivering food and medical supplies to Tigray after building makeshift bridges as the criminal TPLF clique destroyed the existing ones in the region.

The ambassador said a favourable environment is now created for making the aid accessible.

In his briefing, the Spokesperson touched on the economic and citizen-centered diplomatic activities carried out by the government within the past two weeks.

He also addressed questions related to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent visit to Kenya and the visit of Sudanese Prime Minister to Ethiopia.

Government Forms National Independent Economic Council (December 14, 2020)

Prime Minister Office has today announced that the government has formed a National Independent Economic Council tasked to put forward recommendations to help effectively implement and follow up effectiveness and sustainability reform programs underway in the country.

The establishment of the National Independent Economic Council is also said crucial to promote inclusive economic development policy, comprehend complicated social problems and scrutinize policy alternatives accordingly.

Based on an announcement it posted on December 12 2019, Prime Minister Office has been receiving recommendations and applications for candidates of the National Independent Council membership.

After screening candidates out of 290 nominees in three phases, Prime Minister Office shortlisted 16 intellectuals who have expressed their interests to work for the council.

Air Space in Tigray Region Reinstated For Air Transport Service (December 14, 2020)

The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority has today announced the reinstatement of the airspace in Tigray region starting from 2:00 PM on December 14, 2020.

All the airports in airspace of the northern region of the country have also been allowed to resume flight services accordingly as of today, the Aviation Authority said.

The decision came at a time when the government has announced completion of law enforcement operation in Tigray region.

It is to be recalled that the Civil Aviation notified on November 4, 2020 the closure of the international and domestic flying routes which cross Ethiopian northern air space following belligerent attack of the TPLF Clique against the Northern Command of National Defense Force and commencement of federal army’s offensive against the grenade group.

First Phase Construction of African CDC Headquarters Commences (December 14, 2020)

The first phase of the construction of the African CDC has been commenced in Addis Ababa in the presence of AU Commissioners, members of the diplomatic community from Chinese embassy in Addis Ababa and high ranking officials of Ethiopia.

Ambassador of China to Ethiopia, Zhao Zhiyuan, Social Affairs Commissioner of the African Union Amira Elfadil, Human Resources Science and Technology Commissioner, Professor Sarah Anyang Agbor, Health Minister of Ethiopia Dr. Lia Tadesse and Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie are among the dignitaries presided over the launch of the first phase building of African CDC.

The China Aided Project of the African CDC Headquarters building is expected to upscale and build skills and competency of disease Control and Prevention endeavors in the continent Africa.

Building of the Headquarters will be laid at 90,000 sqm of land allotted to the African CDC by the government of Ethiopia in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City of Addis Ababa in a specific place named “Haile Garment”

Telecom, Electricity Services Restored In Tigray Region: SOEFactCheck (December 14, 2020)

Following destruction to infrastructure by the criminal clique’s militia, which resulted in a communication’s and electricity blackout in the Tigray region, the relevant Federal stakeholders have been on the ground since Mekelle came under Federal command, repairing heavy damages sustained, state of emergency fact check indicates.

On December 10, 2020 Ethio Telecom shared in a media briefing the details of infrastructure damages caused to the Mekelle Core Site which resulted in telecom service disruptions in the region as of November 4, 2020.

According to the state of emergency fact check issued today, Following Mekelle coming under Federal command, Ethio Telecom technical experts managed to retrieve CCTV camera footage from the premises of the Mekelle Core Center, which showed masked men entering the compound and turning off power supply switches while Tigray Special Forces subdued company guards protecting the compound.

As of December 12, 2020, Ethio Telecom shared that mobile voice services in Mekelle city and Maiychew have been restored, in addition to Dansha, Humera, Maikadra, Turkan, Maytsebri, Korem and Alamata.

As it pertains to electric power services, on December 13, 2020 Ethiopian Electric Power announced that electricity has been restored to Mekelle city and its vicinity.

Cities and towns between Mekelle and Alamata have had power disruptions due to conductor and insulator damages sustained to transmission lines.

Through the coordinated efforts of two technical teams, in addition to Mekelle and surrounding towns, power has also been restored in the north eastern part of the country specifically Metema, Humera and Welkayit.

Both service providers continue to undertake repair work to enable unhindered service provision in the region.

PM Abiy Confers With Commanders of ENDF, Interim Tigray Administration In Mekele (December 14, 20200)

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed conferred yesterday with commanders of the National Defence Force and cabinet of the Interim Administration of Tigray in Mekele City.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the National Defence Force has completed the offensive as per the plan set extending appreciation to the army for its role in the law enforcement operation.

The army has fully accomplished its mission with unity and gallantry, the Prime Minister underlined, expressing his delight over what have been carried out accordingly.

Prime Minister stressed need to speed up the operation underway to bring the culprits to justice and return to routine development works.

FM Demeke Holds Discussion With Ethiopians In Kenya, Malawi (December 13, 2020)

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, has held discussion with Ethiopians living in Kenya and Malawi.

In the virtual meeting held yesterday, Demeke briefed them about the current situation in Ethiopia and government’s efforts to bring the criminal TPLF clique to justice.

He assured them that the government would further strengthen its rehabilitation efforts and on-going humanitarian assistance in the Tigray regional state.

Demeke called on them to assist the rehabilitation efforts and other activities to rebuild Tigray as well as provide support for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Ambassador of Ethiopia to Kenya, Meles Alem for his part thanked them for their support for the successful attainment of the law enforcement operation in Tigray.

Ambassador Meles said he is confident that the Diaspora will assist government’s efforts to bring perpetrators to justice, rehabilitate displaced people and rebuild damaged infrastructure.
