Ethiopia Sends Its Version of Guidelines, Rules on GERD Filling (August 5, 2020)

Ethiopia had sent its version of the guidelines and rules on the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt resumed the virtual tripartite negotiations on the dam last Monday under the auspices of the African Union (AU) after they were suspended for two weeks.

In statement issued yesterday, the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, said “Ethiopia had sent its version of the guidelines and rules on the filling of the GERD.”

Ethiopia sent the document in line with the communiqué of the African Union Assembly Bureau dated 24 July 2020 and the understanding reached by the Ministers of Water Affairs, it said.

However, Egypt and Sudan requested to adjourn the meeting to be able to consider the guidelines and rules that Ethiopia had communicated, it added.

According to the statement, an agreement has been reached to resume the negotiation once the two countries complete their consideration.

The meeting was adjourned to reconvene on Monday 10 August 2020 as proposed by Egypt’s delegation. The meeting held for the past two days was attended by observers from South Africa, European Union (EU), the United States (US), and AU Bureau of the Assembly assigned experts

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt yesterday resumed their negotiations to resolve a years-long dispute over the filling and operation of the Grand Renaissance Dam.

Water and Irrigation ministers of the three countries took part in the negotiation which was held online amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The virtual meeting was also attended by officials from the African Union and South Africa, the current chairman of the African Union.

Officials from the U.S. and the European Union were also in attendance.

The talks came a day after tens of thousands of Ethiopians flooded the streets of Addis Ababa, in a rally to celebrate the first stage of the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam reservoir.

The negotiation will continue for the coming two weeks with a combination of trilateral ministerial meeting, expert working group meetings, and sessions with experts and observers.

Ethiopia has reaffirmed its fair and reasonable position on River Abay that the dam will generate power to millions of its citizens who are left out of access to electricity, help bring them out of poverty and also create regional economic integration in the region and beyond.

Health Ministry to Conduct 17 Million COVID-19 Tests via Month-Long Campaign (August 4, 2020)

Ministry of Health stated that it will conduct close to 17 Million COVID 19 tests during the nationwide testing and prevention campaign kicked off recently.

In a press conference held to brief media on the nationwide COVID 19 testing and prevention campaign, Minister of Health, Dr. Lia Tadesse said the efforts being exerted by the government to curb the pandemic are nothing without active participation of the general public.

The campaign will not be effective without active participation of the general public, the Minister said calling all stakeholders to join hands against the pandemic which is rapidly spreading among the community.

She called for augmentation of isolation and treatment facilities in all Woredas of the country for the transmission of the virus is drastically rising in all parts of the nation.

Dr. Lia further requested artists and public figures to contribute their share for the success of the national testing and prevention campaign in creating awareness through artistic works how to effectively prevent and control the spread of the virus.

The Minister urged the public to get tested and adhere to precautions by washing their hands, wearing masks and keeping distances as per the precautions set by the government for the successfulness of the campaign in terms of curtailing the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Ethiopians All Over the World Voice Support for GERD (August 2, 2020)

Ethiopians all over have voiced support to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) expressing their delight on developments through merrymaking.

Many have celebrated GERD declaring the Motto “Our voice for our dam” joining outdoor events took place in several cities of the country.

Thousand of Addis Ababa residents, dressed colorfully and waving the national flag have shouted joyfully “It is My Dam”, “Our voice for our dam” Slogans across the streets of the capital.

Some were dancing in a very peculiar way just to express their delight over successful developments of GERD.

Several segments of the community regardless of their age and social status have reaffirmed support for the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

A huge number of cars beeping their horns have also joined the multitudes of residents being in a pile, some loading youths who were singing loudly in support of GERD.

Artists and renowned figures have also participated in an event held at Sheraton Hotel to honor the dam and voice support for its successful wrapping up.

The event is aimed to celebrate the first phase filling of the dam and promote Ethiopia’s Rights on the utilization of Abay River among the global community.

Various embassies and consulate offices of Ethiopia in various parts of the world have also organized events where diplomatic corps and members of the diaspora reaffirmed support for the national flagship project.

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen and other high ranking government officials took part in the event.

The Deputy Premier, on the occasion, expressed gratitude to all Ethiopians contributed to the construction of GERD calling for continued engagement in the Green Legacy Initiative Campaign for sustainable wellbeing of the dam.

Ethiopia to Launch Nationwide COVID 19 Testing Campaign Tomorrow (August 1, 2020)

Ethiopia will officially launch a nationwide month-long COVID19 testing campaign, which will determine the next steps to undertake in the New Year.

In a twitter post, the Prime Minister said “increased testing is key to knowing the trend of COVID19 nationally so as to enable effective decision making on various fronts.”

The Prime Minister called upon all stakeholders to participate and encourage various segments of the society to get tested, in line with the Ministry of Health’s plans.

There are rapid rises in COVID 19 cases in many parts of the country, especially in the capital Addis Ababa.

The nation recorded 915 new cases of coronavirus yesterday – the highest daily total to date.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country now stands at 17,999, with 284 deaths and 7,195 recoveries.

UK Welcomes Continued Tripartite Negotiations on GERD (July 31, 2020)

The United Kingdom (UK) has welcomed the continued tripartite negotiations between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The Under Secretary of State for Africa, James Duddridge made the remark in a press conference conducted on Wednesday following the conclusion of his three-day official visit to Ethiopia.

According to Duddridge, during his visit he held discussions with higher government officials about the current status of the GERD and the ongoing tripartite negotiations between the three countries as well as on other issues of mutual concerns.

He said “we welcome President Cyril Ramaphosa’s mediation. We welcome the continued technical discussions on the dam.”

UK’s Under Secretary of State for Africa has also urged the countries to continue with their discussions as it is important for the development of region.

“The dam is not just power for Ethiopia, but it will be sold to Sudan, it will be sold across the region,” he stated.

Ethiopia, UK Sign £105m Grant Agreements (July 28, 2020)

Ethiopia and the United Kingdom (UK) have signed two grant agreements amounting to £105 million.

The agreements were signed here today by Ahmed Shide, Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance and James Duddridge, UK’s Minister for Africa.

The first grant agreement, amounting to £60 million, will be used for the implementation of land investment for transformation phase 2 program.

The program aims to bring transformative, systematic, and sustainable change in land certification and marketing system in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and SNNP regional state.

The second grant, amounting £45 million will be used channelled to Ethiopia’s economic transformation program, which is designed in line with out-ward oriented, manufacturing led sustainable and inclusive growth program of Ethiopia.

The aim of the program is to support the Ethiopian government’s vision of export-led manufacturing growth through foreign and domestic investments.

The program will be implemented in Industrial Parks (IPs) built in Oromia, Amhara, Tigray and SNNP regional states.
