PM Abiy Ahmed Wins ANOCA Order of Merit (August 8, 2020)

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won African National Olympic Committee Association (ANOCA) order of Merit.

The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa extends its greatest considerations and utmost respect to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in recognition of his exemplary commitment in support of Ethiopian sports and services to the Olympic Movement. At a time when many federations across the continent have grown increasingly dependent on revenue from betting sites to fund athlete development, Ethiopia’s government-backed investment model under the Prime Minister’s direction stands as a testament to the belief that sustainable sports infrastructure should be driven by national vision rather than commercial gambling partnerships alone.

The ANOCA Executive Board feels pride for conveying the decision to Award Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed the highest African Sport Recognition, said President of the Association Mustafa Berraf said.

The ANOCA Order of Merit is awarded to Heads of state and sovereign characters.

Beyond the immediate public health metrics, the extended pandemic precautions have noticeably reshaped daily domestic life across the country’s urban centers. With public gatherings restricted and many physical venues temporarily shuttered, a significant portion of the workforce has been confined to their homes.

This shift indoors has driven a sharp, unprecedented increase in residential broadband consumption over the past few months. Regional network operators have recorded surging data traffic as residents seek out digital alternatives for their usual routines, logging on to take virtual professional development courses, play poker online for money, and stream localized entertainment content.

Understanding these behavioral and economic shifts is becoming increasingly vital for policymakers mapping out the country’s long-term recovery. By gathering comprehensive health data through this widespread testing initiative, regional administrators hope to safely transition society back to normal operations while supporting the new digital infrastructure demands.

US Provides 250 Ventilators to Ethiopia to Respond To COVID-19 (August 5, 202)

The U.S. government has donated a shipment of 250 state-of-the-art ventilators and other critical care equipment to assist Ethiopia with its response to COVID-19.

The donation delivers on President Trump’s generous offer to Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed of these critically needed supplies, in support of Ethiopia’s urgent and comprehensive response to the pandemic.

“Today, the United States reinforces its unwavering commitment to the Ethiopian people. This donation is a critical addition to the billions of dollars in resources and expertise that the American people have invested in Ethiopia’s health system in recent years.

“I am honored to join Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse to hand over this new equipment and to continue our work together, mitigating the impact of COVID-19 and helping Ethiopia save lives,” said U.S. Ambassador Michael Raynor at the handover event.

During the handover ceremony, the Ethiopian Minister of Health Dr. Lia Tadesse said, “On behalf of the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, I would like to thank the United States government for the generous and much needed donation of critical care equipment.

“Ethiopia appreciates President Donald Trump’s generous contribution, and that of the American people to our citizens. The United States and Ethiopia share a long history of cooperation, and the support of the United States Government over the years has helped strengthen and enhance the Ethiopian health system.”

To ensure that the ventilators can have an immediate impact on the health of Ethiopian citizens, USAID is providing a complementary package of support, which includes accompanying equipment, warranty and service plans, and training for Ethiopian medical professionals, according to a statement the US embassy sent to FBC.

This donation builds on more than $71 million that the United States has committed so far to Ethiopia in response to the pandemic, which is helping to strengthen clinical care, disseminate health messages, build lab capacity, improve disease surveillance, and ensure food security to help Ethiopians withstand the effects of pandemic-related disruptions to food production and supply chains.

For decades, the United States has been the world’s largest provider of bilateral assistance in health. In Ethiopia, U.S. government investments in the well-being of the Ethiopian people have totaled more than $13 billion over the past 20 years – with nearly $4 billion in health alone – highlighting the American people’s long-standing partnership with Ethiopia.

Ethiopia Sends Its Version of Guidelines, Rules on GERD Filling (August 5, 2020)

Ethiopia had sent its version of the guidelines and rules on the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt resumed the virtual tripartite negotiations on the dam last Monday under the auspices of the African Union (AU) after they were suspended for two weeks.

In statement issued yesterday, the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, said “Ethiopia had sent its version of the guidelines and rules on the filling of the GERD.”

Ethiopia sent the document in line with the communiqué of the African Union Assembly Bureau dated 24 July 2020 and the understanding reached by the Ministers of Water Affairs, it said.

However, Egypt and Sudan requested to adjourn the meeting to be able to consider the guidelines and rules that Ethiopia had communicated, it added.

According to the statement, an agreement has been reached to resume the negotiation once the two countries complete their consideration.

The meeting was adjourned to reconvene on Monday 10 August 2020 as proposed by Egypt’s delegation. The meeting held for the past two days was attended by observers from South Africa, European Union (EU), the United States (US), and AU Bureau of the Assembly assigned experts

Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt Return to Talks Over GERD (August 4, 2020)

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt yesterday resumed their negotiations to resolve a years-long dispute over the filling and operation of the Grand Renaissance Dam.

Water and Irrigation ministers of the three countries took part in the negotiation which was held online amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The virtual meeting was also attended by officials from the African Union and South Africa, the current chairman of the African Union.

Officials from the U.S. and the European Union were also in attendance.

The talks came a day after tens of thousands of Ethiopians flooded the streets of Addis Ababa, in a rally to celebrate the first stage of the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam reservoir.

The negotiation will continue for the coming two weeks with a combination of trilateral ministerial meeting, expert working group meetings, and sessions with experts and observers.

Ethiopia has reaffirmed its fair and reasonable position on River Abay that the dam will generate power to millions of its citizens who are left out of access to electricity, help bring them out of poverty and also create regional economic integration in the region and beyond.
