Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew Holds Discussion with EU Ambassadors (November 20, 2019)

The Ethiopian Foreign Minister H.E. Gedu Andargachew today (November, 20) met and held discussions with resident European Union Ambassadors led by H.E. Ambassador Johan Borgsatm.

The meeting was held in accordance with Article 8 dialogue of the Cotonou agreement that was signed to regulate cooperation between the European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries in June 2000.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Gedu appreciated the EU for its unrelenting commitment with regard to development assistance.

“We in Ethiopia believe that our partnership with the EU is of great significance to the realization of various development goals Ethiopia is striving to achieve,” he added.

In explaining Ethiopia’s new course to its foreign policy, Mr. Gedu said that countries of the Horn are embarking on the new path of cooperation spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and showing to the world that they are capable of solving their problems by themselves.

The Foreign Minister also briefed the EU Ambassadors on Ethiopia’s positive roles in promoting peace with its neighbours.

Mr. Gedu stressed that Ethiopia’s interests will be best served through the existence of peaceful and stable neighbouring countries.

Highlighting the Sidama People Referendum which is underway, Mr. Gedu reassured the Ambassadors that Ethiopia is preparing to conduct free and fair election in 2020.

“Making the upcoming election free, fair and credible will be the culmination of the democratic reform that the current Government has championed,” he added.

Concerning the Grand Renaissance Dam, Mr. Gedu stressed on the fact that the commencement of the construction of the dam was to support poverty alleviation and socio-economic development efforts which are matters of survival in the current state of the country.

In discussing the overall human rights environment in Ethiopia, Mr. Gedu highlighted positive developments that have been achieved since the implementation of the new reform agenda.

He also indicated that a lot remains to address challenges to the advancement of human rights including the weak capacity of institutions.

The Foreign Minister finally underlined his Government’s commitment to secure peace and stability in the country so that both foreign and domestic investments flourish.

The EU Ambassadors lauded the reform Ethiopia is undertaking and forwarded questions for further clarifications which were addressed in detail by the Foreign Minister.

The Cotonou agreement regulates the relationship between the two bodies in economic, political and development dimensions.

 

The 4th Trilateral Meeting on GERD Kicks off in Addis (November 15, 2019)

The fourth trilateral technical dialogue between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) begins today (November 15, 2019) in Addis Ababa.

The meeting sets out to consult on outstanding issues over the filling and operation of the dam.

The meeting takes into account the results acquired from previously held Ministerial consultative meetings.

Lessons will also be drawn from the 5 rounds of meetings undertaken by an Independent Scientific Research Group concerning the filling and releasing of water from GERD.

The 4th Trilateral Meeting will also consider the recent Washington discussion on GERD and the Sochi, Russia consensus between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. USA and the World Bank are attending the meeting as observers

Ethiopia, USAID Launch $63m Five-Year Project to Expand Health Information Systems (November 14, 2019)

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Health, announced the launch of the new USAID Digital Health Activity to continue investments in digital information solutions to further strengthen the country’s health system and improve the quality of services.

USAID Mission Director Sean Jones and Minister of Health Dr. Amir Aman inaugurated the new activity, which builds on U.S.-Ethiopian efforts to create a modernized health information system that ensures the entire sector has the data, analytics, and skills necessary to improve the health and well-being of all Ethiopians.

The five-year USD $63 million USAID Digital Health Activity will train end-users including doctors, nurses, health extension workers, and policy-makers at all levels of the health system to utilize technology more effectively and enable them to better serve patients and families across the country.

USAID will also partner with local universities to introduce courses that develop competencies in health innovations and electronic solutions, and establish career paths that empower young Ethiopians to drive digital solutions across the sector.

The Digital Health Activity will also create opportunities for entrepreneurs and youth-led tech organizations to utilize their expertise in providing support to health centers, according to a statement by the US Embassy.

“In addition to simply expanding digital health systems and strengthening the skills of today’s medical professionals, we are also increasing our focus on developing the leaders of tomorrow to drive health innovations far into the future,” said USAID Mission Director Sean Jones.

USAID’s Digital Health Activity is implemented by JSI and a consortium of partners.

President Sahlework Receives Delegation from British Colombia University (November 11, 2019)

President Sahlework Zewdie received a team from the University of British Colombia in Vancouver at the National Palace today, according to the Office of the President.

The President has paid a visit to the University of British Colombia last June while she was participating in the Women Deliver Conference held in Canada.

The leadership team, who came from Vancouver, followed up on some of the areas of partnership raised back in June.

During the meeting Sahlework emphasized that a lot could be done through the partnership and that special attention should be given to it.

The university leadership team also expressed its interest to work with institutions of higher education in Ethiopia on various areas.

They explained their plans to create strong bonds between universities in the two countries.

PM Meets with Melinda Gates (November 11, 2019)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed met with Melinda Gates, co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) earlier today.

The Foundation has been supporting Ethiopia improve agricultural productivity and increased coverage of health interventions for several years.

The two discussed furthering enhancing BMGF’s support in the Government’s key priority areas, according to office of the Prime Minister.

Ethiopia, Washington Agree To Cooperate In Transport Management System (November 12, 2019)

Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport Dagmawit Moges held talks with Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington DC on ways to cooperate in transport management system.

The two sides agreed to hold experiencing sharing and knowledge transfer programs in designing parking policy as well as reducing traffic jams and transport-related air pollution in the capital Addis Ababa.

They also agreed to work together on traffic management, vehicles data management, management of toll roads, issuance of drivers’ licenses, urban metro and road safety, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Dagmawit on the occasion said Ethiopia had launched a national campaign this month to reduce deaths, injuries, and property damages due to road traffic accidents.

The experience sharing and knowledge transfer programs would help Ethiopia to effectively implement the soon to be applied speed limiters and directives that require all passengers to wear seat belts, she added.

Addis Ababa and Washington DC renewed their sister city agreement yesterday.

Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Engineer Takele Uma and Mayor Bowser signed the agreement in the Ethiopian capital.

Addis Ababa, Washington DC Renew Sister City Agreement (November 11, 2019)

Addis Ababa and Washington DC have renewed their sister city agreement. Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Engineer Takele Uma and the visiting Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser signed the agreement in the Ethiopian capital today.

The two countries have agreed to work together in the economic, health, business, technology, innovation, cultural exchange, and green development sectors.

Since 2013, Washington DC has had a sister city agreement and protocol of friendship with Addis Ababa.
Mayor Bowser arrived in Addis Ababa last Saturday at the invitation of Engineer Takele.

On Sunday, she visited the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela in Amhara regional state and the Unity Park in Addis Ababa.

In celebration of Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Washington last year, Mayor Bowser proclaimed July 28, 2018 “Ethiopia Day in DC.”

Home to more than 30,000 Ethiopian immigrants, the Washington, DC metropolitan area has the largest population of Ethiopia-born people in the United States.

PM Meets with Outgoing IGAD Executive Secretary (November 8, 2019)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed met today with the outgoing Executive Secretary of IGAD, Ambassador (Eng) Mahboub Maalim, as well as the incoming Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.

Prime Minister Dr Abiy appreciated Ambassador Maalim’s dedication and contribution to the regional organization and the efforts made through IGAD to stabilize the region, according to office of the Prime Minister.

Ethiopia’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Workneh has formally assumed duty as Executive Secretary of IGAD yesterday.

Dr. Workneh expressed his eagerness to work for the betterment of the region.

The Executive Secretary commended Ambassador Maalim for his prominent achievements during his tenure as a chief of IGAD Secretariat.

Ethiopia Shows Its Firm Position of Equitable Use of Nile Waters in Washington Meeting: FM (November 8, 2019)

 Ethiopia has seized the meeting hosted by the United States on Wednesday to show its firm position of equitable use of the Nile water, said Gedu Andargachew, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Ethiopian delegation, led by Gedu issued a press conference in Washington yesterday following the end of the meeting attended by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the President of the World Bank Group.

During the meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Ethiopia had reflected its rights on fair usage of the waters of the Nile, said Gedu.

Ethiopia is building the dam not to harm others but to provide power to it 70 million people have no access to electricity and reduce poverty, he said.

Ethiopia attaches great importance to the trilateral technical discussions and is confident that any disagreements would be addressed by the consultations of technical committee, he said.

The meeting was beneficial to clear up confusions and reflect Ethiopia’s constructive position towards Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam once completed, he said.

President Trump also expressed his desire to join ribbon cutting ceremony when the dam is completed, according to the Ethiopian Foreign Minister.

During the meeting held in Washington, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have reached a consensus to continue the trilateral technical discussions on the dam.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is now more than 68% complete. Works on the two turbines that could begin producing electricity in 2020 is nearing completion.

Ethiopia envisaged finalizing GERD project in 2023.

FM Gedu Meets With U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs (November 8, 2019)

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew held talks with Tibor Nagy, Assistant Secretary for U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs, in Washington yesterday.

The two sides discussed U.S. support for Ethiopia’s historic political and economic reforms.

They further highlighted Ethiopia’s important role in advancing peace and security in the region.

Gedu traveled to the United States last Monday to attend a meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) hosted by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the President of the World Bank Group.

During the meeting Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have reached a consensus to continue the trilateral technical discussions on the dam.
