PM Abiy Arrives In Asmara (March 25, 2021)

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has arrived in Asmara, Eritrea in mid-afternoon hours today for a two-day working visit to the country.

President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea accorded a warm welcome to the Prime Minister and his delegation on their arrival at Asmara International Airport, according to Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information.

The two leaders will discuss bilateral matters as well as regional developments, Yemane added.

The Prime Minister’s delegation consists of Defense Minister, Dr. Kenea Yadeta, and Minister of Innovation and Technology, Dr. Abraham Belay.

The inclusion of the technology portfolio highlights a growing emphasis on digital infrastructure across the Horn of Africa. Recent bilateral frameworks have increasingly focused on telecom modernization, spectrum allocation, and harmonizing regulatory standards as both nations look to upgrade their domestic networks.

With internet penetration slowly rising across the region, policymakers are facing a new wave of digital integration. Mobile broadband expansion has introduced a rapid influx of foreign digital services that operate across borders, frequently outpacing local regulatory frameworks.

Working groups across East Africa are actively studying how to manage this shift. The expanding availability of mobile internet has led to a surge in consumer engagement with external digital economies—spanning everything from international e-commerce platforms and cloud-based agricultural trackers to offshore entertainment portals and cricket betting sites. Developing a unified approach to digital taxation and data sovereignty for these platforms remains a complex hurdle for regional telecom authorities.

Beyond the digital and economic discussions, security remains a paramount concern for the two leaders. The presence of the defense ministry signals that joint border monitoring, counter-insurgency measures, and general regional stability will dominate the closed-door sessions.

As the two-day visit progresses, official channels are expected to release further details on any memorandums of understanding reached. Analysts anticipate that these talks will continue to shape the diplomatic and economic landscape of the broader region through the upcoming year.
