PM Dr Abiy Holds Phone Talks With Swedish PM (April 24, 2020)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has held phone talks with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

The two discussed on the coronavirus (COVID19) national and regional efforts to mitigate the adverse effects.

“Sustainable international partnerships are key in this period and appreciate your solidarity with Ethiopia,” said PM Dr Abiy.

Sweden’s confirmed cases of the coronavirus currently stood at more than 16,755 with more than 2,000 deaths.

Ethiopia has 117 confirmed cases, with three deaths and 21 recoveries.

Ministry Conducts Massive Door-To-Door COVID-19 Survey (April 24, 2020)

More than three million households have been accessed through the door-to-door COVID-19 survey conducted thus far, said the Ministry of Health.

Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse said the survey was carried out by deploying health extension workers, agricultural development experts, teachers and other volunteers.

The survey helped identify 427 persons with symptom of the virus.

The survey, which was first focused on airports and land border crossing points, has now expanded to Addis Ababa and regional states, she told ENA.

Ethiopia has so far 117 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID 19), with three deaths and 25 recoveries.

PM Holds Virtual Discussion with African Heads of State on COVID19 Response (April 23, 2020)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has held virtual discussion with African Heads of State and leading African businesses.

In a Twitter post, the Prime Minister described the discussion as productive.

“Fruitful follow-up deliberations with members of the Bureau of the Assembly of the AU, other Heads of State, and more than 20 leading African businesses on the role of the private sector in COVID19 responsiveness,” he said.

The Prime Minister commended the commitment of African Development Bank, Africa Exim Bank and other private stakeholders to contribute to the Africa COVID fund and the Africa Center for Disease Control.

He finally said “Strengthening the Africa CDC and enhancing our testing capacity as a continent is crucial.”

UNICEF Hands Over Medical Supplies to Ministry Of Health (April 23, 2020)

UNICEF Ethiopia has handed over medical supplies to the Ministry of Health to support Ethiopia’s response to the coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic.

Partially funded by UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), the medical equipment for health workers arrived in Ethiopia last week.

The medical supplies include masks, surgical gowns, face shields, coveralls and others medical equipment.

Adele Khodr, UNICEF Representative in Ethiopia, handed over the medical equipment to Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr Lia Tadesse.

In her remarks, Khod said “UNICEF will continue to support the multi-sectoral public health COVID19 response.”

“Even during COVID19, we must ensure that the health care system continues to work for children, especially in immunization,” she said.

Dr Lia for her part thanked DFID and UNICEF for their timely contribution.

According to her, the donation will ensure that “our health workers support the COVID19 response and provide other important services.”

Ethiopia Confirms Three More COVID-19 Cases (April 21, 2020)

Ethiopia has reported three new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19), out of the 745 samples tested over the past 24 hours.

This brings the total cases in the country to 114.

One of the three confirmed cases is a Chinese national residing in the town of Sebeta, Oromia regional state, according to the Ministry of Health.

Ethiopia has so far registered three deaths and 16 recoveries from the virus.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, close to 2.5 million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally.

More than 171,000 people have died and more than 656,000 have recovered from the virus.

Ethiopian, Japanese PMs Hold Phone Talks on Addressing COVID-19 Crisis (April 21, 2020)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has held phone discussion with Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

The discussion focused on ways to tackle coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. The Ethiopian Prime Minister tweeted the following after the talks:

“Good phone call with PM @AbeShinzo on how we can collaborate in addressing the #COVID19 crisis, particularly the economic and food security challenges that may arise as a result. Our conversation affirmed to me that #Africa has a strong ally post #TICAD and in times of crisis.”

Ethiopia and Japan declared a nationwide state of emergency to halt the spread of the virus. Ethiopia’s emergency decree will remain in force for five months.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Japan passed 11,000, with 263 deaths related to the virus. Ethiopia has now 114 confirmed cases and three deaths.

Jack Ma to Send Third Donation to Africa (April 20, 2020)

The Jack Ma and Alibaba Foundations said they will make a third donation of medical equipment to the African Union (AU) and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to assist African nations in the fight against COVID-19.

The medical supplies include 4.6m masks, 500,000 swabs and test kits, 300 ventilators, 200,000 clothing sets, 200,000 face shields, 2,000 thermal guns, 100 body temperature scanners and 500,000 pairs of gloves.

In March, the foundations donated 100,000 medical masks, 20,000 test kits, 1,000 protective suits and 1,000 face shields to each of the 54 African countries.

In their second donation early this month, the foundations provided 500 ventilators, 200,000 suits and face shields, 2,000 thermometers, 1million swabs & extraction kits and 500,000 gloves.

Africa has so far registered close to 22,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID 19), with 1,120 deaths and 5,482 recoveries.

Ethiopia’s COVID-19 Cases Rise To 111(April 20, 2020)

Ethiopia has confirmed three new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19), out of the 396 samples tested over the past 24 hours.

This brings the total cases in the country to 111.

All the three confirmed cases are Ethiopian nationals residing in Dire Dawa city, according to the Ministry of Health.

Two of them have travel history from Djibouti, while the other patient had contact with confirmed case, it said.

Ethiopia has so far registered three deaths and 16 recoveries from the virus.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, more than 2.4 million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally.

More than 165,000 people have died and more than 629,000 have recovered from the virus.

Ethiopia Confirms 9 More COVID-19 Cases (April 18, 2020)

Nine more people have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total confirmed cases in Ethiopia to 105.

The county had conducted laboratory test on 659 samples over the past 24 hours.

The newly confirmed cases include eight Ethiopians and an Equatorial Guinea national, according to the Ministry of Health.

Six of the confirmed cases have travel history abroad, it said.

Ethiopia has so far registered three deaths and 16 recoveries from the virus.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, more than 2.2 million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally.

More than 154,000 people have died and more than 579,000 have recovered from the virus.

PM Extends Easter Message to Ethiopian Christians (April 18, 2020)

Prime Minister Dr Aby Ahmed today issued his Easter message.

Ethiopian Christians celebrate Easter, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, tomorrow.

In his address to the faithful, the Prime Minister said “on Easter festivity, something occurs to our mind, we know joy follows pain and darkness, light”

He said “we are now at a time of upheaval due to COVID 19,” a virus that invaded and rocked the whole world.

The psychological burdens as human beings are battling the dire situations due to lose of lives of their beloved ones, social, economic and political disorders and impacts on religious practices, he said

He urged the general public to stand united and rally along the government to face the realities and fight the virus to minimize the effects that it might pose against the nation.

PM Dr Abiy called for further preparedness to withstand the national challenges that might result from the COVID 19 outbreak in the country.

Expressing his full hope that this catastrophic time will pass, he urged the public to do their level best to become victorious in fight against the virus and shorten the time of panic.

The Prime Minister finally wished all Ethiopians celebrating Easter a happy holiday.
