UK Delivers Medical Supplies to Assist Ethiopia COVID19 Response (April 17, 2020)

Procured by UNICEF Ethiopia with a financial assistance from DFID, the first consignment of medical supplies arrived at the Addis Ababa Bole Airport this morning.

The medical supplies include masks, surgical gowns, face shields, coveralls and others medical equipment, UNICEF Ethiopia tweeted.

The medical supplies will be delivered to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to assist Ethiopia’s coronavirus (COVID19) response, it added.

Ethiopia has so far registered 92 confirmed cases of COVID 19, with three deaths and 15 recoveries.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, nearly 2.2 million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally.

Close to 147,000 people have died and more than 553,000 have recovered from the virus.

Four more Ethiopians have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total confirmed cases to 96.

Seven More People Test Positive for COVID-19 in Ethiopia (April 16, 2020)

Ethiopia has registered seven new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases out of the 401 samples tasted over the past 24 hours.

All today’s confirmed cases are Ethiopian nationals, according to the Ministry of Health. Six of them have travel history abroad.

Chinese Medical Team Arrives In Addis Ababa (April 16, 2020)

 A Chinese anti-pandemic medical expert team, dispatched by the government of China has arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa this afternoon.

The team is selected by the provincial health committee of Sichuan, said the Embassy of China in Ethiopia in a statement sent to FBC today.

They are among the very first batch of anti-pandemic medical teams that China ever sends to Africa since the outbreak.

“It is a full demonstration of solidarity, with the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and an epitome of the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership between China and Ethiopia,” said the statement.

They are going to share experience in and give advice on prevention and control of COVID-19 with local hospitals and experts.

The team will also cooperate and exchange views with African Disease Control Center and WHO office in Ethiopia.

The team comprises of 12 medical experts will be working in Ethiopia for 15 days as planned.

The experts are drawn from West China Hospital Sichuan University, CDC of Sichuan, People’s Hospital of Sichuan Province, the Affiliated Hospital of South-west Medical University and the Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The experts specialize in various areas, including general surgery, epidemiology, respiratory, infectious diseases, critical care, clinical laboratory and integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

The team also carries urgently needed medical supplies including protective equipment, and traditional Chinese medicine that has been tested effective by clinical practice.

Traditional Chinese medicine and integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine is one of the critical factor of China’s success in prevention and control of COVID-19.

The team will spare no efforts in fulfilling their mission by way of in-depth exchanges of hands-on experiences with Ethiopian experts and officials, in a bid to help further improve the prevention and control capabilities of Ethiopia and beyond in the fight again this common enemy of humanity.

Ethiopia has registered three more coronavirus (COVID-19) cases out of the 431 samples tasted over the past 24 hours.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 85.

UAE Provides 15MT Aid to Ethiopia to Fight COVID-19 (April 14, 2020)

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has provided 15 metric tons of aid to Ethiopia to assist efforts to fight coronavirus (COVID-19).

The assistance would enable medical staff in the country to safely perform their professional duties in combating the virus’ spread.

Prime Minister thanked the UAE for supporting Ethiopia’s fight against the virus, which has so far infected 74 people and killed three other people.

Ethiopia Registers Three More COVID-19 Cases (April 13, 2020)

Ethiopia has announced three new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19), taking its total to 74.

Dr Lia Tadesse, Minister of Health, the three cases are out of the 247 samples tasted over the past 24 hours.

All the three cases are Ethiopians with no travel history abroad, she said.

Four more people have also recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 14, the Minister added.

PM, Pompeo Hold Phone Talks on COVID-19 Mitigation (April 13, 2020)

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has held phone talks with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, on collaborating for effective COVID-19 mitigation.

The Prime Minister said on Twitter “We discussed on applying collective leadership to minimize adverse effects” of the virus.

He added “food security will be a key challenge for sub-Saharan Africa as the continent grapples with the economic impact of the virus.”

The Africa Centers for Disease Prevention and Control said nearly 14,000 coronavirus cases have been reported in 52 countries in Africa.

The virus also killed 747 people in the continent, it added.

COVID-19 has infected over 1.8 million people worldwide, with a death toll of over 116,000, according to the US-based Johns Hopkins University.

Companies in Hawassa Industrial Park Begin Face Mask Production (April 13, 2020)

Companies in Hawassa industrial park have begun producing face masks as part of efforts to halt spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Currently, they are “producing 10,000 face masks per day to increase to 50,000 per day” said the Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed on Twitter.

“Our industries are adapting to the times. Companies in Hawasa Industrial Park undeterred and shifting operations to meet immediate needs,” he added.

The Prime Minister also called on others to follow suit. “Well done. I encourage other companies to innovate and adapt,” he said.
