Ethiopian, Qatari Leaders Discuss Bilateral Ties in Doha (March 19, 2019)

Addis Ababa, March 19, 2019 – Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed today held a formal session of talks with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in Doha.
During the meeting, they discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries and ways of enhancing and developing them in various fields, especially in the fields of economy, investment, tourism and infrastructure.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments at the meeting attended by high level Ethiopian and Qatari government officials.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister arrived in Doha this morning. Upon arrival, he was received by Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti, Minister of Communications.
The Ethiopian-Qatari relations are taking a new step towards further cooperation, with the visit of Prime Minister Abe Ahmed today.
His visit is of exceptional importance, being his first since he took office in March 2018, and following a major breakthrough in his country on the level of public freedoms and settlement of differences with neighboring countries to strengthen Ethiopia’s status as a regional power in the Horn of Africa.
The success of the Ethiopian-Qatari start-up is reinforced by the strong desire and willingness of Doha and Addis Ababa to develop and expand relations in all areas of mutual interest. This was confirmed by the visit of the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to Ethiopia in April 2017.
Recent years have witnessed a remarkable development in bilateral relations between the two countries, which began decades ago, with the official announcement of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them in 1995.
The development of relations is reflected in a large number of high-level reciprocal visits and the signing of a number of bilateral agreements, which are a strong indication of the parties’ desire to promote and develop these relations to all areas of mutual interest.
Ethiopia is keen to encourage and attract Qatari investments and open the way for businessmen from different sectors to promote joint projects between the two countries that will promote and stimulate the Ethiopian economy.
It also creates positive opportunities for Qatari investors to activate foreign projects with good economic and social returns.
The Ethiopian Investment Forum, organized by the Ethiopian Embassy in Doha, opened in January this year to review investment opportunities in Ethiopia and discuss economic and trade cooperation between the private sectors in both countries.
During the forum, which included a number of Ethiopian and Qatari entrepreneurs, the Ethiopian side presented investment opportunities to Qatari businessmen in the sectors of agriculture, manufacturing, services, medicines, building materials and others.
Ethiopian-Qatari business forum will also be organized this year.

Boeing grounds entire crash aircraft fleet (March 15, 2019

Boeing grounds entire crash aircraft fleet (March 15, 2019)

Boeing has grounded its entire global fleet of 737 Max aircraft after investigators uncovered new evidence at the scene of the fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash.
The US plane-maker said it would suspend all 371 of the aircraft, according to BBC.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said fresh evidence as well as newly refined satellite data prompted the decision to temporarily ban the jets.
The FAA had previously held out while many countries banned the aircraft.
The crash on Sunday in Addis Ababa killed 157 people.
It was the second fatal Max 8 disaster in five months after one crashed over Indonesia in October, claiming 189 lives.
What has the FAA discovered?
The FAA has a team investigating the disaster at the Ethiopian Airlines crash site working with the National Transportation Safety Board.
Dan Elwell, acting administrator at the FAA, said on Wednesday: “It became clear to all parties that the track of the Ethiopian Airlines [flight] was very close and behaved very similarly to the Lion Air flight.”
He added that “the evidence we found on the ground made it even more likely the flight path was very close to Lion Air’s”.
President Donald Trump initially announced that the FAA would be making an emergency order following “new information and physical evidence that we’ve received from the site and from other locations and through a couple of other complaints”.
The US and Brazil became the latest countries to suspend the Boeing 737 Max from flying after nations including the UK, China, India and Australia all grounded the aircraft.
Up until Wednesday, the FAA position was that a review had showed “no systemic performance issues” and that there was no basis for grounding the aircraft.
Earlier in the day, Canada grounded the planes after its transport minister Marc Garneau said he had received new evidence about the crash.
He said that satellite data showed possible similarities between flight patterns of Boeing 737 Max planes operating in Canada and the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed.

Ethiopia all-women flight marks 8 March (March 08, 2019

Ethiopia all-women flight marks 8 March (March 08, 2019)

Ethiopian Airlines is marking International Women’s Day by operating an all-women flight from Addis Ababa to Oslo.
The airline announced this in a tweet with a reference to the Beatles’ song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds: “The Lucys are about to control the skies for the 5th time, flying to Oslo on this March 8.”
The flight will be operated by female professionals in the sky as well as on the ground, the airline posted on Facebook.
This means airport operations, flight dispatch, load control, ramp operation; on-board logistics, safety and security, catering as well as air-traffic control are to be carried out entirely by women.
Ethiopian Airlines Chief Executive Officer Tewolde GabreMariam explained that the initiative celebrates women on a continent where “gender inequality still persists”.

The national carrier said it hoped the flight will help ‘show the power of women to the world’
“We are immensely honoured that we have women trailblazers in every aspect of our aviation field,” he said.
“Women are an integral part of our success story from the start, and with this dedicated flight we honour and celebrate their indispensable contribution to our aviation group and the broader aviation industry, our country and the continent at large.”
This isn’t a first for Africa’s largest airline. It has previously operated all-women crew flights to Bangkok, Kigali, Lagos and Buenos Aires.

Ethiopian Airlines is keen to showcase women’s longer-term contribution to the industry and the progress they’ve made in conquering male-dominated professions, like those of pilot and aircraft technician.
Dr Saba Fikru, the head of the airline’s medical and health services, says that 35% of the company’s 16,000-strong workforce is female.
“These days, an increasing number of women are completing their pilot training successfully. Now we can hear a female voice coming from the flight deck or the cockpit,” she says.
