Diaspora Trust Fund Commits Half Million USD Medical Relief Fund (December 31, 2020)

The Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF) has committed half a million USD medical relief fund to mitigate the current critical shortage of life-saving medications and medical supplies in Ethiopia.

The trust fund has also launched a fundraising campaign to generate a similar amount from donors, a press release of EDTF added.

The entire amount, which is expected to be one million USD, will go towards mitigating the shortage of medical supplies in many health care institutions due to the recent humanitarian crisis.

The Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund stated that it was the largest single donor to the COVID-19 crisis in Ethiopia and has procured and delivered medical supplies worth over one million one hundred seventy-three thousand USD.

The contribution and impact that EDTF made towards the COVID-19 initiative and the launching of other development projects is a true testament to your dedication and generosity, the press release added.

Over the past two years, the fund has mobilized over 26,000 donors from 93 countries, established 48 chapters, engaged over 200 volunteers, raised more than seven million USD in donations, and set a process to identify and finance socio-economic development projects, and responded to priority needs, it was learned.

In 2020, it has accomplished significant milestones while building a sustainable organization that will transcend generations.

Furthermore, it approved one million three hundred forty-two thousand USD to finance five development projects and transferred one hundred sixty-five thousand nine hundred thirty- nine USD to Ethiopia to start these projects.

The Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund Advisory Council, established on August 9, 2018, created the Friends of EDTF as an independent non-profit organization to advance the mission of improving disadvantaged Ethiopians lives by engaging the global Ethiopian Diaspora from all walks of life.

Ministry to launch campaign to Promote Ethiopia in themes trending under Rising Ethiopia (December 30, 2020)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia launches a two-month-long social media campaign today (December 30), trending under the phrase Rising Ethiopia and targeting all Ethiopians and those of Ethiopian origin.

The campaign aims to promote the good qualities of Ethiopia and assuage the effects of the misguided media narrative that dominated the air for the last couple of months.

Besides mobilizing Ethiopians living abroad for a common good, the campaign will also introduce Ethiopian investment potential to the international community and build up Ethiopia as an emerging tourism destination.

Key themes will anchor the campaign in different phases, including Tourism, Culture, Diaspora Business, Investment, and flagship projects and charities.

The first phase of the campaign (December 30-January 24) will start today with a webinar discussion and showcase Ethiopia’s Tourism potential and attractions in various activities.

The final phase of the campaign (Ethiopia Giving Week) will mobilize the public to raise funds for some flagship projects, including the GERD and charity causes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will run the campaign in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Tourism Ethiopia, Ethiopian Investment Commission, concerned individuals, all Ethiopians, and media outlets.

PM Abiy Calls for Unyielding Adherence to COVID 19 Precautionary Measures (December 29, 2020)

Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed called for unyielding adherence to COVID 19 precautionary measures.

The Premier said COVID 19 cases continue to surge in the country as intensive care units are operating at maximum capacity.

It is imperative that people do not lose sight of precautionary measures to contain spread of the virus, the Premier stressed.

“Save your life; save someone else’s life and support our health workers by wearing a mask.” Prime Minister said in facebook.

Number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in Ethiopia has reached 123,145 while death toll passed 1,900. Currently, there are 11,385 active cases in the country of which 231 are in severe condition.

Ethiopia Vows To Strengthen Efforts to Peacefully Resolve Border Issue with Sudan (December 29, 2020)

The Ethiopian Government has vowed to strengthen its ongoing efforts to peacefully resolve the border issue with Sudan.

Despite ease of tension along the border now, the government will reinforce its efforts to peacefully resolve the problem, said Ambassador Dina Mufti, Spokesperson of MFA.

In his bi-weekly press briefing today, Ambassador Dina said that Ethiopia has no interest to enter into war with Sudan in the border conflict masterminded by conflict profiteers.

However, “it is impossible to say that some Sudanese Government officials are not involved in the problem,” he said.

Commenting on latest developments in Tigray regional state, he said things are returning to normalcy and misguided narratives on the operation are slowly changing.

The media are slowly but surely understanding that the TPLF clique had disrupted electric and communication lines, demolished bridges, roads and airline runways, he said.

Owing to the economic diplomacy carried out by Ethiopian officials, investors from India, Turkey, the UAE, and China have shown interest to invest in Ethiopia, Ambassador Dina said.

According to him, some of the representatives of companies in these countries have paid a visit to the country and showed interest to invest in agriculture, construction, textile, edible oil production and mining.

Regarding citizen-centred diplomacy, the Spokesperson said Ethiopia had repatriated a total of 328 citizens from Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.

PM Says 10 Year National Perspective Plan Prioritizes Peace, Rule of Law (December 28, 2020)

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has today stated that country’s 10 year perspective plan is unique in recognizing the fact that development makes enduring peace possible.

The 10 year perspective plan puts peace and the rule of law as critical objectives within the national development endeavors, the premier noted.

Prime Minister Abiy underscored that various measures are being put in place calling for close collaboration between citizens and institutions for better results.

Council of Ministers approved on December 11, 2020 the 10-year National  perspective Plan which is said to be an instrumental to enable the country’s high growth trajectory and position Ethiopia as an African beacon of prosperity.

Tigray Interim Administration Holds Discussion with Residents Of Mekelle (December 25, 2020)

Heads of the interim administration of Tigray regional state have held discussion with residents of Mekelle city.

The meeting was chaired by Dr Mulu Nega, CEO of the interim administration, Dr Abrham Belay, senior leadership of Tigray Prosperity Party, Maj.Gen Belay Seyoum, Chief Commander of the North Command and Ataklti Haileselassie, mayor of the interim administration.

Residents represented from all sub-cities of Mekelle, including religious leaders and traditional leaders, attended the meeting.

The participants condemned TPLF’s armed attack against the north command of the defence forces and requested the administration to strengthen its structure up to the lower level.

They further demanded the administration to organize and deploy police forces to maintains peace and security of the city as well as to restore internet services.

The officials, who chaired the meeting, responded to the questions raised by the participants.

Electoral Board Sets June 5 for Upcoming General Elections (December 25, 2020)

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced a tentative date for the 6th general elections.

During a consultative forum held with political parties today, the electoral board proposed the elections to be conducted on June 5, 2021.

The board also announced plans to declare final results of the elections from 6-28 June, 2021.

It should be noted that NEBE postponed the elections scheduled for August 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ethiopia, World Bank Sign $100m Financing Agreement (December 25, 2020)

Ethiopia and the World Bank have signed a loan agreement of $100 million for the women entrepreneurship development project (WEDP).

The project aims to increase the earnings and employment of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) owned or partly owned by female entrepreneurs.

The project will also provide business trainings to female micro and small business-owners registered with the WEDP program as well as technical assistance to implementing agencies such as TVET colleges and city MSE development offices.

The agreement was signed here today by State Minister of Finance, Yasmin Wohabrebbi, and World Bank Country Director for Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Eritrea, Ousmane Dione.

Yasmin said, “the timely response, to reach those that have been highly impacted by the pandemic is critical in ensuring the financial sector has adequate liquidity to reach MSEs to reduce the loss of livelihoods and jobs.”

She also explained the importance of developing tailored financial instruments, which allow MSEs to survive during challenging times saying “Women-owned businesses are disproportionately affecting by limited access to credit because they are less likely to present collateral guarantees to access credit”.

The State Minister also emphasized inclusive growth and economic empowerment of women and youth are at the center of Ethiopia’s development agenda.

Ousmane Dione for his part said “the Bank has been working to open doors for female entrepreneurs in Ethiopia by providing the necessary finance, skills, services and support they need to grow their business in order to grow their earnings and create jobs for Ethiopians.

“The WEDP additional financing aims to secure the gains made by the previous phases of the project which have been rated highly satisfactory due to its innovative and effective model of reaching women entrepreneurs.

“The project, in the past, has helped Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) upscale to reach women entrepreneurs, who often fall in the category of underserved market segments.

“The project has enabled first-time borrowers to access loans through introducing innovative approaches such as data-driven credit scoring technologies, which can predict the ability of a borrower to repay a loan and in turn have significantly reduced collateral requirements.”

US Provides More Than $18Mn to Ethiopia In Support Of Rehabilitation Works (December 24, 2020)

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US is providing more than 18 Million US Dollars to Ethiopia in support of the country’s rehabilitation activities.

Secretary Pompeo said the donation is extended in humanitarian assistance to help refuges and host communities affected by the law enforcement operation in Tigray region.

He tweeted that civilians must be protected from harm and humanitarian workers should be provided safe and unhindered access to the affected areas.

Washington D.C. Council Recognizes “Little Ethiopia” In US (December 24, 2020)

Council members of Washington D.C. have unanimously approved the “Little Ethiopia” Ceremonial Resolution.

The 9th and U Street business corridor located in the Shaw neighborhood in Washington DC named “Little Ethiopia”.

The inaugural ceremony held today with the presence of Ambassador Fitsum Arega, DC Council Member Brandon T. Todd, religious leaders, DC Council officials, Ethiopia community members and other invited guests.

Ethiopian Ambassador to the US, Fitsum Arega has extended gratitude to Mayor of D.C. Muriel Bowser and member of the council Brandon T. Todd for championing the efforts and contributing to the approval.

The ambassador also thanked members of the Ethiopian American Business Community for promoting the initiative.

Member of the D.C. Council Brandon T. Todd said Ethiopia stands a symbol for all African people in their struggle for freedom, dignity and respect.
